Now without the Flash:

Interesting, isn’t it?

This is one of the common misconceptions about the FLASH. It can lighten dark areas, when used under the right circumstances, however, the Auto mode on your camera, does NOT know when to use the flash. It sees dark, shadows, and boom, you have have a picture like exhibit A.

Natural light and even fluorescent light can be quite attractive. Direct sun is best avoided as your subjects can have shadows on their faces. BUT, if you use a flash when you are in direct sun and those shadows appear, if you are close enough to your subjects, the flash can lighten those shadows away.
